Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence said on 30 October 2026 that the first Thales GM200 MM/C multifunction radar system has been delivered to the country. The ministry described the purchase as a step in strengthening the combat capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ national division and the effectiveness of its artillery.

According to the ministry’s release, the system is designed primarily to locate the positions of hostile indirect-fire systems. Depending on its configuration and equipment, it can also be used for airspace surveillance and integrated into air defence systems. Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said the radar helps to detect both artillery firing positions and FPV drones.

The purchase is part of Lithuania’s cooperation with the Netherlands. The ministry said it plans to keep working with the Dutch Ministry of Defence on maintenance and support, and to run a programme of continuous improvement for the systems. The contract value covers technical support and further development as well as the radars themselves, the ministry said, but the release does not state the figure.

Lithuanian company ELSIS TS is taking part as a subcontractor to Thales, contributing system integration work. The release does not say how many radars are on order or when the others will arrive. Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT also reported the delivery.

Why it mattersThe ministry ties the radar to a continuing programme with the Dutch defence ministry for maintenance and upgrades, so the purchase brings a long-term support arrangement with an ally as well as the hardware.
